An Oak Tree: Michael Craig-Martin, 1973

I saw this not on facebook this afternoon…..Seems so complex in context of a conversation.. Yet i can find one word to define it…

In a room at Tate Modern there is a three-quarter full glass of water on a high shelf. It is a work by Michael Craig-Martin called An oak tree. Beside it there is the following text:

Q. To begin with, could you describe this work?

A. Yes, of course. What I’ve done is change a glass of water into a full-grown oak tree without altering the accidents of the glass of water.

Q. The accidents?

A. Yes. The colour, feel, weight, size …

Q. Do you mean that the glass of water is a symbol of an oak tree?

A. No. It’s not a symbol. I’ve changed the physical substance of the glass of water into that of an oak tree.

Q. It looks like a glass of water.

A. Of course it does. I didn’t change its appearance. But it’s not a glass of water, it’s an oak tree.

Q. Can you prove what you’ve claimed to have done?

A. Well, yes and no. I claim to have maintained the physical form of the glass of water and, as you can see, I have. However, as one normally looks for evidence of physical change in terms of altered form, no such proof exists.

Q. Haven’t you simply called this glass of water an oak tree?

A. Absolutely not. It is not a glass of water anymore. I have changed its actual substance. It would no longer be accurate to call it a glass of water. One could call it anything one wished but that would not alter the fact that it is an oak tree.

Q. Isn’t this just a case of the emperor’s new clothes?

A. No. With the emperor’s new clothes people claimed to see something that wasn’t there because they felt they should. I would be very surprised if anyone told me they saw an oak tree.

Q. Was it difficult to effect the change?

A. No effort at all. But it took me years of work before I realised I could do it.

Q. When precisely did the glass of water become an oak tree?

A. When I put the water in the glass.

Q. Does this happen every time you fill a glass with water?

A. No, of course not. Only when I intend to change it into an oak tree.

Q. Then intention causes the change?

A. I would say it precipitates the change.

Q. You don’t know how you do it?

A. It contradicts what I feel I know about cause and effect.

Q. It seems to me that you are claiming to have worked a miracle. Isn’t that the case?

A. I’m flattered that you think so.

Q. But aren’t you the only person who can do something like this?

A. How could I know?

Q. Could you teach others to do it?

A. No, it’s not something one can teach.

Q. Do you consider that changing the glass of water into an oak tree constitutes an art work?

A. Yes.

Q. What precisely is the art work? The glass of water?

A. There is no glass of water anymore.

Q. The process of change?

A. There is no process involved in the change.

Q. The oak tree?

A. Yes. The oak tree.

Q. But the oak tree only exists in the mind.

A. No. The actual oak tree is physically present but in the form of the glass of water. As the glass of water was a particular glass of water, the oak tree is also a particular oak tree. To conceive the category ‘oak tree’ or to picture a particular oak tree is not to understand and experience what appears to be a glass of water as an oak tree. Just as it is imperceivable it also inconceivable.

Q. Did the particular oak tree exist somewhere else before it took the form of a glass of water?

A. No. This particular oak tree did not exist previously. I should also point out that it does not and will not ever have any other form than that of a glass of water.

Q. How long will it continue to be an oak tree?

A. Until I change it.

Honest criticism is hard to take…

Most people i have had the pleasure of knowing never question themselves or their actions .. if someone were to question it .. its often perceived as a judgment being passed … when honest criticism all it ever was…

In my lifetime having come across many such people…

Unfortunately some of them have been my nearest and dearest… If anyone knows me as a person also knows i can be a very big critic towards a handful few… What too many people don’t see is there is no fire without fuel… and the guy screaming fire is probably the one who cares the most .. about the situation

When someone stops criticizing you .. its a cause for concern. Giving up on you is the last thing you would want people to do…

Why i do it ?

its simple really .. Self Awareness is a switch .. which some people over their years of growing up simply forget to switch on…

Do i Hurt People ?

According to 9 out of 10 people i know …. say i do …
Do i really ? Or is its just their perception coupled in with a weak heart ?

I have never tried to seek answers to the second question… cause if given an option.. and i cared enough
i much rather be the asshole giving a reality check rather then a sugar coated pill…

Have i used comments made by my critics about my methods/ways  ? .. sure i did.. i questioned my methods/ways and rectified it if i was convinced logically its a flaw…

if one can learn to accept another perception and filter it to meet half way with ones own perception .. i cannot even begin to imagine the possibilities of ones self development ..

Start from where the world.. as it is …not as you would like it to be..

Life has taught me many lessons some hard some easy….

The only from of respect that ever matters is self respect

Never enough expressed with gratitude and never too late for apologies …

It doesn’t matter how the world sees it .. what matters is how you see it

Perception can make a world of a difference … Question it

Its hard to imagine…. there is so much to each one of us …Mind Body and Soul….. Parallel Universes on their own …

Imagination taking us to the worlds that never were .. the prime agent for all human perception..

Someone once asked me how can i not worry as much … as most?

Worries are matters of the mind and that’s where they will always stay unless you want them to travel with you.. So hop on your spirit next stop a parallel universe…

As Lennon once said “Reality leaves a lot to the imagination”

Does it now ?

Albert Einstein Once Said

“I do not believe in the immortality of the individual, and I consider ethics to be an exclusively human concern without any superhuman authority behind it.”

Ethics or the “E” Factor as i like to call it .. is unique in every individual. There is no real guidelines around which an individual lays the grounds for Ethics he or she follows..

The Foundation of an Individuals ethics is generally laid by his or her family in the early days .. School education and friends in the years follow and finally college and an individuals every changing perception over the years based on experience..

Society as we know it generally showers respect and admiration over an individual for the most part based on his or her deeds or accomplishments..

i don’t know if ethics are the driving force behind deeds or accomplishments .. but i do know ethics define a person as a whole …

Different people have different perception. One man’s meat could be another man’s poison. A couple bought a donkey from the market. On the way home, a boy commented, “Very stupid. Why neither of them ride on
the donkey? “Upon hearing that, the husband let the wife ride on the donkey. He walked besides them. Later, an old man saw it and commented, “The husband is the head of family. How can the wife ride on the donkey while the husband is on foot?” Hearing this, the wife quickly got down and let the husband ride on the donkey.

Further on the way home, they met an old Lady. She commented, “How can the man ride on the donkey but let the wife walk. He is no gentleman.” The husband thus quickly asked the wife to join him on the donkey.
Then, they met a young man. He commented, “Poor donkey, how can you hold up the weight of two persons. They are cruel to you.” Hearing that, the husband and wife immediately climbed down from the donkey
and carried it on their shoulders.

It seems to be the only choice left. Later, on a narrow bridge, the donkey was frightened and struggled. They lost their balance and fell into the river. You can never have everyone praise you, nor will everyone condemn you. Never in the past, not at present, and never will be in the future.

Thus, do not be too bothered by others words if your conscience is clear..
